{"id":449,"date":"2018-09-07T19:26:41","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T19:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/net4573.net.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/?p=449"},"modified":"2018-09-11T18:30:55","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T18:30:55","slug":"the-fairfax-arms-the-place-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/index.php\/2018\/09\/07\/the-fairfax-arms-the-place-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fairfax Arms: The Place to Be"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Raymond Nye \/\/ AMH 4110-0M01 \u2013 Colonial America, 1607-1763<\/h4>\n<p>The town of Colchester, established in 1753 by the Virginia Assembly, was laid out in a triangular shape and consisted of forty-one lots and a marketplace.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Colchester\u00a0quickly became a thriving port town, shipping tobacco to Great Britain.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> One\u00a0of the earliest businesses to be established in the port town were ordinaries or taverns that provided a place where merchants, craftsmen, and planters could go and enjoy good fare, talk about life or business, all in a warm and friendly environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-451\" style=\"width: 164px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-451\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_interpretive-map-246x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_interpretive-map-246x300.png 246w, https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_interpretive-map.png 379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Layout of Colchester in 1760 &#8211; \u201cAn Interoperative Historical Map of Fairfax County Virginia in 1760.&#8221; Published by Office of Comprehensive Planning, County of Fairfax, 1987.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Situated approximately three hundred meters from the Occoquan River along Essex Street (formerly known\u00a0as the King\u2019s Highway) stood the Colchester Inn, commonly known as the Fairfax Arms Tavern.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> On\u00a0May 17, 1756, lot 21 was one of\u00a0six lots purchased by Benjamin Grayson that became the Fairfax\u00a0Arms Tavern.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> William\u00a0Linton rented the property from Grayson and was granted a license to run an ordinary at the premises on July 21, 1761, which was renewed on February 15, 1763.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> Linton\u00a0was financially backed by Hugh West, a local attorney and prominent land owner, who had made his wealth through inheritance and tobacco.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_454\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-454\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/va0432.photos.161357p\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-454 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_LOC-photograph-300x208.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_LOC-photograph-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_LOC-photograph-433x300.png 433w, https:\/\/projects.cah.ucf.edu\/economyofgoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/05\/Nye-Raymond_LOC-photograph.png 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Undated photograph of the Fairfax Arms Tavern. Library of Congress, Prints &amp; Photographs Division, HABS, Reproduction number HABS VA,30-COLCH,1-3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Evidence of the Colchester Inn can be found in the accounts of the Colchester store of the mercantile firm of John Glassford &amp; Company, established in Colchester in 1758.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> As can be seen\u00a0in the account below, the tavern keeper William Linton made several purchases from Henderson\u2019s Colchester store in 1761.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> The purchase\u00a0of the tea kettle suggests that, even in the American colonies, the English still enjoyed a nice cup of hot tea when they were away from home. Hector Ross purchased it in 1772 but sold it again a year later to Alexander Henderson, the manager and owner of the Colchester store where William Linton made his purchases in 1761.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the late 1770s, the Fairfax Arms started to provide another important service for the residents of Colchester. Alexander Henderson and William Thompson were the town\u2019s postmasters, and it is believed that they operated their postal business from the premises. Henderson sold the property to Thompson who in July 1784 tried to put the property up for sale in the <em>Virginia Journal and Alexandria Advertiser.<\/em> However, he was unable to sell the property\u00a0and held onto it until his death in 1800. According to the listing, excerpted below, the property by that time included a stable and a meat house.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A large and convenient dwelling with excellent cellar, four rooms on a floor with a fireplace to each and three rooms above. Good kitchen with oven adjacent to the fireplace, a room at one end with a planked floor, lathed and plastered, glass windows, was intended for a housekeeper or white servant; stable for eight horses and a meathouse, garden and about one acre adjacent in grass well inclosed.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What makes this tavern extra interesting is that it is one of only two original buildings built in Colchester in the 1760s still standing today. Now a private residence, the building represents an important part of colonial America in Virginia.
